Big fish in a small pond, or…

In 2020, I was leaving my job. Upon handing in my resignation, my soon-to-be ex-boss tried to convince me to stay. He asked me this question:

You are a big fish in a small pond here, while over there, it’s the opposite. Which do you want to be? A big fish or a small fish?

I ended up leaving the job anyway, but back then, I could not answer him. However, now, I realise that there were no correct answers to that question because it was the wrong question to begin with.

It doesn't matter if you're a big fish or a small fish or whether you live in a big or a small pond. What counts is your feeling. Your happiness, your fulfilment, and your sense of purpose are the things that truly define your life. So the right question would be:

Are you happy in your pond?

Today, you might revel in being a big fish in a small pond, enjoying the recognition and influence that comes with it. Tomorrow, you might crave the anonymity and opportunities for growth that come with being a small fish in a big pond. The day after, you might find joy in being one of many small fish swimming together in a vast ocean of possibilities.

Life isn't static. It's a series of stages, each with its unique challenges and rewards. What makes us happy today might not fulfil us tomorrow. And that's okay. People change, and we move on.

The freedom to choose

The beauty of life lies in our ability to choose. We're not bound to any single pond. If we're unhappy, we can move. And here's the thing – moving doesn't always mean going bigger.

Sometimes, true happiness comes from downsizing to a cosier pond. Sometimes, it's about joining a school of like-minded fish in a massive ocean. And sometimes, it's about creating your unique ecosystem–maybe we're not supposed to live in a pond.

So, let's stop worrying about the size of our pond or how we measure up to other fish. Instead, let's focus on what truly matters:

Are you happy where you are?

If the answer is yes, then you're precisely where you need to be. If it's not, then it's time to explore new waters. Life is too short to spend it in a pond that doesn't bring you joy. Swim freely, explore widely, and always prioritize your happiness.

I hope you find this insightful. Remember:

It's not going to be easy,
But it's not impossible.

Your friend,
Brian.
